Experimental Sinusitis in Rabbits(II) : Effects of Duration of Ostial Obstruction on Experimental Sinusitis

Abstract
Pneumococcal innoculation following the ostial obstruction is essential to induce the experimental sinusitis in the normal rabbits, but the ostial obstruction alone could not induce the experimental sinusitis because of technical difficulty to
occlude
the natural ostium completely through a middle meatus. Previous study reported that merocel was effective to occlude the natural ostium which resulted in experimental sinusitis in rabbits.
The purpose of this study was to induce the experimental sinusitis by occluding the natural ostium with merocel and to evaluate the critical period of ostial obstruction for the sinusitis to persist.
Unilateral ostial obstruction using merocel was performed through maxillary sinus and sinuses were observed at various interval(i.e., at third day, first, second, third and fifth week) when merocels were removed and then 3 weeks later sinuses
were
reevaluated.
Ostial obstruction lasting more than 3 weeks induced the maxillary sinusitis which persisted after removal of merocel.
